The Kern River and it’s tributaries boast some incredible and scenic fishing opportunities. The North (and main) Fork flows from Johnsondale right through the center of Kernville offering easy access to both wild and stocked trout.
Above the Johnsondale Bridge, there is a 4-mile wild trout section which is home to a number of large native Kern River Rainbow trout.
For those looking to get further off the beaten path, check out the Forks of the Kern, Golden Trout Wilderness, and South Fork of the Kern (Kennedy Meadows and Above).

The Lake and Mountains
Lake Isabella
A classic California lake with easy access and good fishing. A great spot to swim, boat, kayak or paddleboard. There is access right at the bottom of the street or you can take a drive all the way around the lake until you find the perfect spot to hang out. Check in with the local marinas for rental options if you want to get out on the water.
Sequoia National Forest
Once you pass through Kernville you leave cell service behind and enter the remote and scenic Sequoia National Forest. The cabin is the perfect base camp for a day trips to the Trail of 100 Giants (a paved path where you can walk amongst Giant Sequoia trees) or the Needles (where Alex “Free Solo” Hornold climbs) — Or it can serve as a place to relax and shower after an epic backpacking trip into the Golden Trout Wilderness.
Alta Sierra Ski Resort
If the stars align on your winter trip, you may get a chance to ski, snowboard, or tube our valley’s hidden gem. They don’t make their own snow, so be sure to follow their Instagram page to stay up to date on their openings. Even if the lifts aren’t running, the area is a beautiful spot to hike in the summer, or snow shoe in the winter. It’s only a few miles up the hill from the cabin, but make sure your car is capable if you make the trip in the winter.
Small Town Charm
Kernville and the surrounding areas offer glimpses of the Old West and have a true small town charm. While you might see the area’s rich history in it’s design, it still has all of the modern amenities that we’ve grown accustomed to.
Food and Drink
The area has everything you need to replenish after a long day on the water or in the mountains. The Kern River Brewing Company has awesome beer and great food in a fun mountain atmosphere. Ewing’s on the Kern offers an upscale experience with river views right from your table. There are so many more options so check out our Guide to the Sierras.
Nightlife and Live Music
If you are looking to keep the good times rolling after dark, be sure to check one of the local bars. Some of our favorites are the Sportsman (Sporty’s), The Saloon, or 178 - you’ll be sure to find some live music, karaoke, or lively locals.
